Introducing Aromatherapy To Your Foal

This springtime did you have the pleasure of watching your beloved mare become a mother and meeting their new baby for the first time? Caring for a foal can be a wonderful experience, and now that the first few months are through, the time has come to start training, which means it’s the perfect time to introduce the young horse to essential oils..

The first few months

Just like with human children, the first few months of a foal’s life are extremely important. It is in these formative times that they will learn how to live with both other horses and humans. In the early months, it’s important to get them used to grooming and handling. This can be a fun and playful experience. With our all-natural horse care products at Equi-Spa, you won’t have to worry about the safety of your grooming products. Once they are a little older, after they have bonded with their mother, you can begin training. This is when I recommend introducing aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy for foals

When you are ready to introduce aromatherapy to your foal, start slowly just like you would with a grown horse. Our friend Catherine Bird from Happy Horses in Australia wrote a great introductory guide for Holistic Horses. I recommend checking out her tips to get started.

Essential oils to try

Once you are ready to incorporate aromatherapy into your foal’s routine, there are a couple of essential oils I recommend trying. These oils are very gentle and can have some wonderful results:

  • Chamomile: Anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, anti-bacterial
  • Lavender: Calming, soothing, anti-anxiety
  • Lemon: Mental focus
  • Clary Sage: Mood enhancing, stress relief
  • Sweet Orange: Promotes confidence

Used during training, grooming, and even during bonding and playtime, aromatherapy can help guide your foal through their early life. Essential oils can help reduce stress, build confidence, and keep young horses focused on learning.

I’d love to hear how you’ve used aromatherapy with your horses, post in the comments below. Also send pictures I can share in our gallery to the email or social media addresses below.
