ESSENTIAL OILS FOR HORSES Black Pepper: Good for deep muscle relaxation during massage, aids digestion, stimulates blood circulation, bactericidal and antiseptic.
Carrot Seed: Non-toxic, non- irritating, repels intestinal worms (so does garlic); beneficial to liver, cell regenerative helps with healing and rebuilding, toxin buster that aids acidic conditions such as arthritis.
Chamomile: Helpful for allergies, cuts, inflammatory conditions, wounds, bites, sores, and teething youngsters, analgesic, relaxes tense muscles.
citronella: Insecticidal qualities, good antifungal and antibacterial properties. Good protection against all flying insects
Clary Sage: Do not use except in very low concentrations on Pregnant Mares. Used for massage treatments, gentle sedative action, very uplifting, relieves tension and anxiety, a "happy oil".
Eucalyptus: Never should be given or taken orally. Very toxic taken internally. Do not use with homeopathic remedies. A very clinical aroma used for respiratory infections, helps with the pain of arthritic conditions, soothes over used muscles, stimulates the immune system, insect repellent, muscle wash , and throat rub.
Geranium: Love this oil! An excellent antidepressant and helps with stress related issues very well. Anti-inflammatory, relieves tension and has an effect on the endocrine system, great natural fly repellent, has styptic qualities, (helps stop bleeding). Mixed with witch hazel, helps limit bruising. It also combats intestinal worms, fungicidal, astringent, antiseptic, diuretic, lymphatic stimulant.
Grapefruit: A fabulous oil! High in Vitamin C. promotes hair growth, aids stiffness and fatigue, helps disperse lactic acid in muscles, antidepressant, calming, antiseptic, and helps ease anxiety in horses.
Lavender: Lavendin: The most important oil to have available at all times. Natural fly repellent, antiseptic, analgesic, calming, antispasmodic, decongestant, works against all sorts of parasites, lice, ringworm, spots, bites, abscess and inflammatory conditions, antifungal, antibacterial, and antitoxic.
Patchouli: Former Hippie Chic favorite!!! Very calming. Used to treat cuts, bruises, wounds, bites, open sores, skin infections, insect repellent, combats mud fever, anti-inflammatory, helps with arthritis, antiseptic, antifungal, immune stimulant. The smell of patchouli gets better with age.
Peppermint: Always dilute. This is another must have in the horse aromatherapy first aid kit. Respiratory tract infections, decongestant, Pain relief, analgesic, muscle spasms, antispasmodic, muscle aches and sprains, analgesic for arthritis and soreness, anti-inflammatory, stimulant for mental fatigue, insect repellent, excellent digestive, and works against intestinal worms. Hot and Cold Properties, both a fever reducer and a cooling agent, promotes sweating to rid toxins.
Rosewood: Excellent immune stimulant, antidepressant, antiseptic, antimicrobial, and bactericidal
Sandalwood: Another hippie inspired favorite. Very woody smell. Great decongestant and works fast in the lungs when inhaled. Expectorant for dry coughs, quietly uplifting, soothes joints and muscles, insect repellent, antibacterial, antifungal, antispasmodic, and helps calm fear reactions
Tea Tree: A tried and true favorite of aroma therapists, pharmacists, and holistic practitioners. Who has not heard of this oil? Does not have a pleasant smell. Very clinical oil used for cuts, wounds, sores, bites, insect repellent, infections (even very nasty ones), thrush, combats airborne bacteria, immune stimulant, very effective fungicidal.
Ylang-Ylang: Can cause headaches if used in high concentrations. Very floral scent. Very calming, analgesic, promotes hair re-growth, euphoric, antidepressant, soothes irritated skin and insect bites.
